NoCo is Irelands largest workspace network, provider. Here Co-founder Brian Moran discusses the benefits of remote work with Aidan and Venetia from Q102.

Aidan:

Reducing our commute, and working remotely are all positive things we think?

Venetia:

Yes, a lot of people looking to do a three day week at home as restrictions lift this morning. And Brian Nolan is the co-founder of NoCo. Good morning, Brian

Brian Moran :

Morning guys, thanks for having me on

Venetia:

Two and a half hours of commuting time could be saved daily by drivers, if they use remote working locations, that’s a huge amount of time.

Brian Moran:

Absolutely massive. Yeah, that was my own experience as well, I’m only about 30 kilometres from the city. And I think prior to prior to COVID, I was spending, you know, anywhere from 90 minutes to two hours coming in in the morning. So, you know, I think the vast majority of people who work in the city are certainly familiar with that, that kind of timeframe and that kind of commute. So there’s obviously you know, by spreading ourselves out and working closer to home, there’s a huge opportunity to get a bit of time back.

Venetia:

Yeah, I mean, there’s a lot of people in their cars right now starting that commute again for the very first time in 18 months. Which must be sort of a little bit demoralising.

Brian Moran:

What it is, I mean, if you, if you look at the makeup of the city, and the people who are working, there’s about a third of everybody who’s working in the city centre, in Dublin are actually coming from outside the city. So, you know, a massive chunk of the workforce is coming in. And I think people have the use of the last 18 months have been used to this, a bit of a rest bite of that commute and you know, they’ve probably most importantly, got a bit of time back, bit a time back themselves, a bit of time back spending more time with their families, you know, or getting healthier, dealings with things they wouldn’t normally do and then they kind of, you know, facing and particularly with the time of year that we’re heading to now, you know, the evenings are becoming a bit darker, you’re getting a little bit colder in the morning.  There’s a bit of a reluctance to get back to the everyday commute

Aidan:

The kind of the stories that we’re kind of getting there that people are having a better quality of life and are still being productive. And I’m sure employees or employers would be quick to notice if production values dropped or lowered. So isn’t it really a win-win situation for an employer and an employee if some balance can be achieved?

Brian Moran:

Yeah, I think so I actually, I think more than anything, it’s an opportunity for employers, you know, a lot of big shifts in work practices normally take a calculus than others, it wasn’t any bigger calculus than the pandemic. So, you know,  we personally, there’s an opportunity for employers to, to grab, particularly in the areas of talent, attraction and retention, you know, employees for the last, you know, 10-15 years have been really pushing for a little bit more time, a little bit more flexibility, you know, in their work and practices, and, you know, it’s, it’s a chance now for employers to sort of wipe the slate clean and do that. And then on the talent attraction side, you know, there’s a massive, shift in what people value in terms of, you know, a work package. So, the feedback we’re getting from our clients is that everybody’s looking for flexibility, they’re all looking for some form of working from home. Obviously, employers need to manage that because they need to make sure that you know, the employees have an appropriate workspace. They’re in the right environment. So, obviously, these kinds of remote work in hopes to work out are ideal.

Aidan:

That’s basically what NoCo does provide a solution to employers and employees.

Brian Moran:

We’re a very simple platform. So what we do is, we work with workspaces across the country. And we packed them all up onto one platform and what we just do, we just make it easy for employers, to provide their employees with that workplace as close to the home. So they can log onto our platform, they can check all the spaces, they can select them, basically, or the workspace, and then we do the rest and get their employee on board and in the space.

Venetia:

It’s a win-win. This is another brilliant Brian Nolan, co-founder of NoCo Thank you. Cheers. That’s cool. Those travel times though. You know, makes you realise how lucky you are. If you can walk to work or cycle.

Aidan:

You got a nice commute/ short commute. And you’re not spending hours getting in your battling to get to work in your battling to get home from work. And then you get in calls will you get something in the shop. Can you do this? Can you do that? It’s only when this pandemic arrived that people realise the stress they’re actually putting themselves under. Now hopefully there will be more flexibility and things will be better

Venetia:

Even staggered hours so people aren’t spending as long in traffic because traffic isn’t all going at the same time.

Aidan:

Absolutely.
